I began my wonderful musical journey at the age of 9 years old. After school my sister and I were what was known as latch key kids in the early 80s, we would come home from school and start our chores and finish up homework before our parents came home, and once finished we would turn to the latest tv sensation, at that time it was music videos, MTV and VH1 were the main choices growing up in The Village of Westmont, Illinois a city about 22 miles west of Chicago. The artists and instruments that I resonated with were acts, such as Jimi Hendrix, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Tony McAlpine, Randy Rhodes and Prince to name a few. The one instrument that stuck out to me was the electric guitar, which prompted that little voice inside my head to say “I can do that” I asked my mom for a guitar, and she purchased a not so expensive brand called a Cort electric guitar and I took a few classes but my enthusiasm for learning far out paced the teacher and I no longer needed his slow paced lessons. I played every day after school. On my 12th birthday I got the surprise of my life when my father got me a Kramer electric guitar. I have been playing my guitar as well as other instruments almost daily. When I moved to Nashville, Tennessee in the early 2000s I got the 2nd biggest thrill of my life when I was sampling a guitar in a music store, I was playing an old Jimi Hendrix song and to my surprise a gentleman walked up to me and ask if I wanted to play with him at the Jefferson Street Festival that upcoming weekend. I was almost floored when the man introduced himself as the one and only Billy Cox the same bassist who played with Jimi Hendrix, and the next surprise was Mitch Mitchell who played in the famous Band of Gypsys was in town and would be on drums as well, that experience is of course one I will never forget. I sat in on a few practice sessions with the Wooten Brothers also, while living in Nashville. These days I reside in south Florida having fun in the sun, giving some private lessons from time to time. I spend a lot of time performing at any open mike venue I can find, I just love playing this wonderful instrument. I hope your experience will be a fulfilling experience for you as well.
